6 Lessons from Our Wettest Ever Summer Project

The British summer is never predictable. For construction teams, that means preparing for both heatwaves and downpours in the same week. This year, one of our major projects faced record rainfall — and still finished on time.

At Majestic Construction, we believe every challenge is an opportunity to learn. Here are six lessons we took away from what we jokingly call our “wettest ever summer project.

Construction Phase Plan support with Majestic Construction

1) Plan for rain, even in summer

Weather delays are often treated as a winter issue, but summer storms can cause just as much disruption. We now factor in weather risk throughout the year. Building flexibility into programmes ensures we can adjust sequencing without losing time or quality.

Pro Tip: Always monitor forecasts daily and update plans weekly to reflect changing conditions.

2) Protect your site early

When heavy rain hit, sites with proper drainage, access control, and material protection fared much better. We invested in temporary drainage channels, covered storage areas, and elevated material platforms to keep productivity going, even in standing water.

Preparation prevents panic.

3) Adapt the programme, not the standard

When the weather changed, we did not compromise quality or safety. Instead, we rearranged tasks to focus on internal works and prep activities while waiting for dry conditions. Flexibility kept everyone productive and safe.

Remember, adapting is not cutting corners — it is professional planning.

4) Keep clients informed

Weather delays can frustrate clients if communication is poor. We issued daily updates, photos, and revised programmes so our client knew exactly what was happening. Transparency builds trust and prevents disputes.

A well-informed client is a supportive one.

5) Keep morale high

Rain can wear down even the best teams. We kept spirits up with regular check-ins, warm shelter, and hot drinks on the worst days. Simple gestures go a long way when morale is tested.

A motivated team always finds a way forward.

6) Capture lessons learned for the future

When the project ended, we held a lessons-learned review. We identified new drainage solutions, site layout changes, and temporary structure improvements to use on future jobs. Every wet day became a data point for smarter planning.

Experience is only valuable if you use it.

Why this matters

Weather is one of the few things you cannot control in construction, but you can control how you prepare for it. Strong planning, protection, and communication reduce downtime, maintain safety, and protect your bottom line.
